CityScape Art Rental and Sale

CityScape Community Art Gallery (335 Londsdale Avenue, N.V.) is having its semi-annual salon-style exhibition and sale of its Art Rentals collection. I have a number of pieces in this collection that could be rented or purchased, along with hundreds of other artists’ work. There are paintings, drawings, collage, prints, photographs and many hybrids in-between. It will be an exciting event in a great venue. The opening reception will be Thursday, January 12th, from 7-9 pm. I hope to see you at the reception.

Anonymous Art Show

Here is a great event that I have a few pieces in. The North Vancouver Community Arts Council is having an “Anonymous Art Show” in which they will be selling art pieces right off of the wall. It starts opening night, Thursday, November 24th, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm, and continues until December 17th.

The show will be made up of 8″ x 8″ x 1.5″ canvas and wood panels, done by both emerging and established artists. Now here is the twist; the artist’s name is on the back, so each piece is priced at $100 and sold anonymously. Half of your $100 dollars goes to help the arts council fund events, classes and youth programmes. The other half goes to the artist. So a great way to get out and support the arts and at the same time purchase something nice for your home or a perhaps a Christmas present. For details click here.

Street Photography Exhibition

On October 28th at 7:00 pm Photohaus Gallery (14 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC) is mounting a “Street Photography” show. There are a number of photographers include in this show, including me. Street photography has since the days Henri Cartier-Bresson been an interesting and dynamic form of photography. If you have the time to drop by and take in the show, I think you may find it interesting and a cash bar is included.

PhotoHaus Gallery has a new show called “Vancouver” opening on Friday September 5th at 7:00 pm. One of my works has been juried into this show. PhotoHaus Gallery can be found at 14 west 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. It promises to be an interesting show.

CityScape Art Rental and Sale

Last night I attended the CityScape Art Rental opening, at which three of my pieces had been selected. The gallery was set up salon style with works of art reaching from the floor to well up to 14 feet. There was a broad collection of visual art on the walls, paintings, drawings, collage, prints, photographs and many hybrids in between. It was exciting to see such diversity in one gallery. In the process of exploring I discovered that there were still more works available by accessing the rolling storage walls further back in the gallery. The show will be up from September 9th to the 24h.

I can see why this program is so successful as there are over 100 artists represented in this gallery and you can purchase or rent depending on your desires or needs.

Mobileography Exhibition

PhotoHaus Gallery had a mobileography exhibition July and August of 2011, in which a number of my pieces appeared. This is a facinating new field of digital art and on opening nights a number of individuals discussed its place within the field of photography and the art world Don Giannatti among them.

Mobile Phone Photography

Over 200 submissions where juried into a show of 40 photographers who produced their images solely on mobile phones, most as it turns out on iPhones. The show is a fascinating collection of images displayed on canvas, paper and iPad screens. One might worry that the resolution might not be up to exhibition quality, but this proved not to be the case; not only could they be enlarged to a surprising size, but also the canvas reproductions had to be a foot and half wide on the short side — which goes to show you that these phones have very good cameras.

To my surprise, the photographs were not only taken by iPhones, but also a great deal of the processing of the photographs was done on the phones themselves. In fact, a number of the photographers who participated were careful to point out that everything from the taking of the photograph to the final processing was all done on the phones themselves. So, it became apparent that these were not only cameras but also digital darkrooms.

Prior

to the opening I was fortunate to get one of the limited seats for a panel discussion on mobileography. The panel was composed of the following photographers:

The surprise guest was Don Giannatti, a writer, photographer, designer and educator from Phoenix, Arizona. The discussion began by asking, “How would mobileography impact DSLR photography?”

The obvious answer is that it would not displace it, but instead it would give the photographer some things a DSLR does not do as well, including access to places that are not DSLR friendly, blending in with the crowd when that is important, the ability to sketch, and being there when the DSLR is not. One thing it might soon replace, however, is the point and shoot as the quality coming from the phones is rapidly becoming as good as point and shoot cameras.

Don Gianatti raised an interesting point about our current world of images. He suggested that we now have cameras the are 26, 40 and 80 megapixels, but the viewing world of computers and video screens is really a 1080p world. The iPhone images are larger than 1080p, so perhaps the megapixel world of the camera is light years ahead of the way we are viewing these images. Obviously, there is a strange technological disconnect.

There was also an intense discussion about all the “apps” that were used on the phones to make the photographs and process the images. So if you what to have some fun, here are some of the recommended applications:
